Environmental behaviour of metals from tailings in shallow rivers: Taxco, central Mexico

Abstract: Mining in Mexico has produced important economic benefits since pre-Hispanic times. On the other hand, tailings and rock wastes constitute potential pollution sources in many zones of the country. Taxco, about 150 km south-west of Mexico City, is one of the historical mining zones of Mexico. The environmental behaviour of metals from tailings in a branch of the Taxco river was investigated. Several communities use the Taxco river water along its flow. Samples were taken from tailings, river-waters and sediment… Show more

“…Similar, worryingly heavily polluted ancient mining environs in Mexico are reported by Armienta et al 1 They document the geochemical survey carried out around the silver mining district of Taxco, with a history of more than 500 years' exploitation. Sadly, the legacy is pollution by Pb and Zn to the point that Taxco river water is poisonous.…”

“…Estas presas han sido motivo de estudio por la academia científica (Armienta et al, , 2004Arcega-Cabrera et al, 2005Talavera-Mendoza et al, 2005, 2006Romero et al, , 2011. Desde el punto de vista ambiental ha sido reportada la generación de DAM vertido en el río Cacalotenango, esta situación puede estar ocasionando un desequilibrio en el ecosistema acuático, y consecuentemente afectando la flora y fauna.…”

“…The two main processes that control the yearly total Pb variation in both rivers are: (1) erosion with discharge, and (2) proportional dilution. Armienta et al [45] studied the geochemical behavior of Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu and As, close to a tailings deposit in a shallow branch of the Taxco River near Taxco City. Mineralogical (by XRD) and chemical determinations (by flame and hydride generation AAS) in sediments and tailings showed that sulfides oxidation and rainwater erosion had released metals and As into the sediments.…”
