“…This delay was first linked with salinity or temperature conditions (CREUTZBERG, 1961). But other authors have argued that this delay might be needed for morphological (JELLYMAN, 1977), or physiological adaptation (DEELDER, 1958;SORENSEN and BIANCHINI, 1986;McCLEAVE and WIPPELHAUSER, 1987;PEASE et al, 2003). The glass eels collected in the downstream sector of estuaries are able to challenge the transfer to freshwater at 15°C (WILSON et al, 2004).…”

“…Threshold temperatures of 9-10°C were described for Anguilla austalis and Anguilla dieffenbachii by (JELLYMAN, 1977;SLOANE, 1984). In Anguilla rostrata, temperatures increasing from 12°C to 19°C triggered the onset of freshwater migration in glass eels caught with bottom traps (SORENSEN and BIANCHINI, 1986), and river temperatures were described as the most important factor determining the first migration towards fresh water (MARTIN, 1995). Stream temperatures of 10 to 12°C were described as a gating factor for elver runs, but to have a limited influence once this threshold was attained (JESSOP, 2003).…”

“…The spawning location and season have been described for some species of temperate eels (Schmidt 1922, Tsukamoto 1992, and there have been various studies on the glass eels Anguilla japonica (Matsui 1952, Tzeng 1985, Tsukamoto 1990, Cheng & Tzeng 1996, Arai et al 1997, A. anguillla (Deelder 1952, Creutzberg 1958, Gandolfi et al 1984, Gascuel 1986, Tongiorgi et al 1986, Lecomte-Finiger 1992, Arai et al 2000, A. rostrata (Sorensen 1986, Sorensen & Bianchini 1986, Wippelhauser & McCleave 1987, Haro & Krueger 1988, Martin 1995, Wang & Tzeng 1998, Arai et al 2000), and A. australis and A. dieffenbachi (Jellyman 1977, 1979, Todd 1981, Sloane 1984, Arai et al 1999b, Jellyman et al 1999, Marui et al 2001. Some of these studies have described the larval duration and growth, timing of metamorphosis and recruitment to coastal waters, or timing of inshore migration of glass eels and elvers in relation to environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, tide cycle, and lunar phase.…”

“…D'après de nombreux auteurs, l'apparition des forts coefficients de marée correspond à une augmentation des captures et à une intensification du flux migratoire (FERNANDEZ et VASQUEZ, 1978 ;CHARLON, 1980 ;SORENSEN et BIANCHINI, 1986 ;ROCHARD, 1992). Il est parfois difficile de dissocier réellement à partir de ces travaux, les effets des cycles de marée et de la clarté lunaire.…”
