Environmental Geochemistry of Mine Tailings Soils in the Artisanal Gold Mining District of Betare -Oya, Cameroon

Abstract: Changes in trace element concentrations in mine tailings (dry and wet) were investigated in the gold mining area of Bétaré-Oya, Eastern Cameroon. Forty-one surface sediment samples were analyzed using ICP-MS for heavy metals and pollution was assessed using Enrichment Ratio and Geo Accumulation Index (Igeo); using a sample from a remote area as control.Trace elements in mine tailings show significant increase compared to the background (control) values, with the exception of Sr and Nb. It is suggested that all… Show more

“…The potential for elements present in soils and sediments to be mobilized/ immobilized and be redistributed depends on several factors such as organic matter, type and amount of clay, pH and the prevailing redox conditions; and pathways. These elements can easily be mobilized and transmitted through for example, water and the food chain to humans (Manga et al, 2017). Therefore, there is great need to investigate the physicochemical properties of soils for agricultural and environmental purposes.…”

“…Because stream sediments are an essential and dynamic component of catchments, they reflect the average chemical composition of the mixture of soils, sediments and rocks [ 32 ]. In this regard, the trace metal contents in this study were presented alongside local background levels in soils [ 49 ] and mean concentrations in ferralsols of the Sub-Saharan Africa region [ 75 ]. All trace metal concentrations (with corresponding data in local soils) in the Lom sediments were lower than the mean levels in local soils.…”

“… Geochemical background: median; Geochemical background threshold: median + 2 (median absolute deviation); metal concentrations in local soil are adapted from Manga et al [ 49 ] while data for ferralsols are after Towett et al [ 75 ] …”

“…Such as pH, organic matter, clay type and redox conditions. The chemical properties could transmitted easily from water to human through the food chain (Manga et al, 2017). Therefore, it is important to obtain ideal physicochemical properties in accordance with environmental purpose and agricultural needs.…”
