Iran has been seeking to develop fully functional waste management strategies to address the problem of its rapidly growing cities. This requires proper evaluation to determine the most appropriate strategies to meet the goals of sustainable waste management. Environmental Impact Assessment is capable of contributing towards this goal. However, such assessments tend to involve a qualitative approach in the evaluation of the sustainability or unsustainability of potential options. Therefore, a suitable quantitative approach to evaluate sustainability/unsustainability is necessary. The paper applies a mathematical model to evaluate the sustainability of unmitigated options for a municipal solid waste disposal site in Tabriz, Iran. This was based upon rapid impact assessment matrix evaluation of the options. The model's application determines whether the options are sustainable or unsustainable. The model application results indicate that all of the options were considered as unsustainable in an unmitigated state. The results for Tabriz were then compared and contrasted with results obtained by the authors for another MSW disposal site near Tehran. Based on this, there are questions as to the potential value of current waste management strategies. The paper concludes by stating that economic costs are the largest single barrier to achieving sustainable waste management. Furthermore, it is important to develop solutions which disposes and manages waste in a manner conducive to the long-term sustainability of the environment-human relationship.

In Brazil, the largest share (51.4%) of municipal solid waste is composed of organic matter; however, composting is rarely used as a treatment technology. In 2008, only 3.8% of Brazilian municipalities had access to composting plants and about 11.6% of municipalities destined the municipal solid waste to recycling plants. This is only 1.4% of waste generated. Recycling and composting are key programs for municipalities to reduce environmental impact. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the environmental impact of inserting a recycling, composting and integrated program in a region of Sao Paulo State, Brazil through the Waste Reduction Model method simulation of greenhouse gases emission (carbon dioxide equivalent and carbon equivalent) and energy use. The results show that recycling and composting can minimize the emission of greenhouse gases, reducing carbon dioxide and carbon equivalents, and promote energy savings. The best result is the integration of these techniques, which can reduce 78.8% of carbon dioxide and carbon equivalents and save 490.9% in energy versus baseline scenario. This study supports municipalities creating scenarios as a tool for planning and decision making to reach targets proposed by solid waste policies.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is an important tool that identifies impact parameters, qualitatively and quantitatively predicts and evaluates the anticipated adverse and beneficial impacts. It then suggests mitigation measures and if possible alternative action. Therefore, EIA becomes mandatory for almost every planning and development processes. This paper makes analysis of the large‐scale polluting industrial processes of steel, power, and cement. It uses EIA study and consequent Environmental Management Plan (EMP) that includes elaborate mitigation measures and peripheral development. Ideally, the complete waste utilization with optimum use of resources and energy can be implemented by the industry and the same is very often mandated by regulatory authorities. The quantitative evaluation of impact by using modified Leopold matrix is separately carried out to compute total impact score (TIS) in each case. Obviously the TIS value in case of EMP with incorporation of social issues and waste utilization comes out to be a net positive value of 2218.3 offsetting the case without these issues, with a resultant high negative value of 5983.5. Sustainability aspect of the project is considered with economic, environmental and social aspects along with waste management aspects, in order to justify the viability of the project.
