Environmental Impact of Geosynthetics in Coastal Protection

Abstract: Geosynthetic materials are applied in measures for coastal protection. Weathering or any damage of constructions, as shown by a field study in Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia), could lead to the littering of the beach or the sea (marine littering) and the discharge of possibly harmful additives into the marine environment. The ageing behavior of a widely used geotextile made of polypropylene was studied by artificial accelerated ageing in water-filled autoclaves at temperatures of 30 to 80 °C and pressures of 10 to… Show more

“…Modern geosynthetic materials are widely used in various structures, including coastal protection, anti-landslide and anti-erosion structures. In damage or prolonged use, geosynthetics during contact with seawater can break off and enter the Baltic Sea, polluting it [4 , 5] . The fragments of geosynthetics are transported along the shore and episodically washed out onshore by the same physical mechanisms which form the bach casts [6] .…”

“…The durability of polymers used in the production of geosynthetic materials also depends on stabilising additives, thanks to which their degradation can be significantly delayed. The use of stabilising agents, the geosynthetic lifetime is extended 10 or even 100 times, depending on the environment in which it was used (Greenwood et al, 2012;Scholz et al, 2021). Additives, due to their functions in the plastic, can be divided into: -processing additives (processing stabilisers, processing modifiers); -functional additives (property stabilisers, property modifiers).…”

“…In an earlier publication, the long-term performance of geotextiles was investigated after accelerated thermo-oxidative aging in an autoclave at elevated temperatures and oxygen pressure. The decline in material properties was assessed by the measurement of the tensile strength [15]. The service lifetime (half-life prediction) was estimated to be more than 300 years there.…”
