Environmental impact reduction of commercial aircraft around airports. Less noise and less fuel consumption

Abstract: Introduction Flight path optimization is designed for minimizing environmental impacts of aircraft around airports during approaches. The main objective of this paper is to develop a model of optimal flight paths taking into account jet noise, fuel consumption, constraints and extreme operational limits of the aircraft in approach. Materials and methods Optimal control problem combining aircraft flight paths, noise and fuel consumption is modeled and solved. Outputs, algorithm efficiency and their ability to b… Show more

“…These include improving the use of the airspace, air traffic control and operations and further improving the use of airspace and air traffic control includes the flexible use of airspace, route redesign, using the new tools and programmes to find most effective route, and reduced separation between the aircraft. Salah [112] developed the model of optimal flight paths taking into consideration jet noise, fuel consumption, constraints and extreme operational limits of the aircraft on approach. The results of this study showed that, the environmental impacts and fuel consumption are reduced by the use of aircraft trajectory optimization during arrivals.…”

“…Simulation techniques can be ideal for reproducing the behaviors of a complex design system of the aircraft. Many previous studies have analyzed the capability of simulation modeling in fuel consumption modeling and optimization [15,112,121,142,227,228]. One of the major limitations of simulation techniques is its inability to guarantee optimality of the developed solution.…”

“…Congestion at the airport and inappropriate air traffic management raised the fuel burn of an aircraft [4]. We have included the independent variables-origin airport, destination airport, flight profile, runway design, taxiway, apron, and weather conditions, as suggested by Senzig et al [67]; Upham et al [77]; Kazda and Caves [45]; IATA [37]; Salah [66]; Simaiakis et al [71]; Singh and Sharma [74] for AI construct. There are a number of ways that airports, airlines and air traffic management providers can improve the air transportation system to minimize fuel burn.…”

“…A healthy environment without undesired sounds is simply removed from the human life (13,14). Aviation industry is a dynamic and fast-paced industry that fits into the needs of today's societies (15). The aviation industry plays a key role in local and national economy (16)(17)(18).…”
