The purpose of this article is to present an overview of the literature regarding the current state of knowledge and practice regarding social equity and environment in the realm of urban transportation. Consisting of two sections, section 1-Transportation and the Disadvantaged explains how age, disability, economic inequity, gender identity, population density, and race affect one's ability to have access and use the transportation system. The second section-Transportation and Environmental Health covers how smog and air pollution, greenhouse gases, noise and vibration, as well as safety and security in transportation affect the disadvantaged groups explained in section 1. It is concluded that the planners, designers, engineers and policy makers need to take the needs and concerns of all citizens into consideration before a project is started.

Carbon Footprint of Railway Projects Under the Belt and Road Initiative and the Future Low‐Carbon Pathways

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) makes headway in constructing railway projects invested by China, yet related environmental impacts are rarely discussed. Here we quantify the carbon footprint of railway project construction (RPC) under the BRI and identify the drivers behind their variations to find possible carbon reduction pathways. Our results show that China‐invested overseas RPC in BRI countries induced 2,095.2 Mt CO2 emissions through the global supply chains during 2008–2017. Specifically, 73% of the carbon footprint relies on supply chains in BRI countries, and 27% spills over to other regions serving as the suppliers of global resources. Upgrading key industries' technological levels in BRI countries to China's average level can mitigate the carbon footprint by 77%. Once all industries achieve China's average technological level, nearly 90% of the carbon footprint can be avoided. The findings potentially provide valuable insights into achieving sustainable project construction in cross‐regional cooperation and promoting green development of the BRI.

Penelitian ini menyelidiki dampak pembangunan infrastruktur transportasi berkelanjutan terhadap mobilitas dan lingkungan di Kalimantan, Indonesia. Pendekatan penelitian dengan metode campuran digunakan, menggabungkan metode kuantitatif dan kualitatif untuk menilai pengaruh infrastruktur tersebut. Temuan survei menunjukkan adanya pergeseran positif dalam pola perjalanan, pilihan moda, dan berkurangnya waktu tempuh perjalanan akibat pembangunan transportasi berkelanjutan. Analisis data lalu lintas menunjukkan penurunan volume lalu lintas dan peningkatan arus lalu lintas. Selain itu, analisis data kualitas udara menunjukkan penurunan substansial dalam polutan udara, termasuk materi partikulat, nitrogen dioksida, dan sulfur dioksida. Wawasan kualitatif dari para pemangku kepentingan utama, seperti pejabat pemerintah, perencana transportasi, pemerhati lingkungan, dan perwakilan masyarakat, menekankan sifat multifaset dari proyek-proyek transportasi yang berkelanjutan. Selain mengakui pengaruh positifnya, mereka juga menyoroti pentingnya perencanaan yang matang dan pelibatan masyarakat. Temuan-temuan ini menggarisbawahi potensi infrastruktur transportasi berkelanjutan untuk meningkatkan mobilitas dan kondisi lingkungan di Kalimantan, sekaligus menekankan perlunya pembangunan yang holistik dan bertanggung jawab terhadap lingkungan.
