Environmental studies on impacts of dredging

Abstract: The coastal zone acts as a major interface between the ocean and continents. Harbours located in this zone face grave problems from sedimentation, which is a global issue for most of the harbours of the world. Dredging which counter acts sedimentation, brings about innumerable environmental impacts -both positive and negative. As a case study, this paper reports the impacts of dredging conducted at Cochin harbour which is the second largest port along the west coast of India; this port is a nodal center in tra… Show more

“…Non-compliance of water quality at beaches was comparatively more than seafronts. The high turbidity could be attributed to the mixing and churning action due to diurnal tides (Rasheed and Balchand 2001). Around 94% of the DO samples were observed to be more than 4 mg/L (SW II) may be due to constant mixing of water and adequate aeration because of tidal waves.…”

“…Dredging is essential to maintain navigation in ports and harbours, as well as for the development of port facilities; However, it also causes a lot of environmental problems (Rasheed and Balchand 2001;Gibb 1997). Dredging operation and disposal of dredging material have been always pointed as the main environmental priorities, and are a big challenge for many ports (HELCOM 2007).…”
