Environmental Sustainability of the Vehicle Fleet Change in Public City Transport of Selected City in Central Europe

Abstract: Diesel is the most used fuel for buses and other urban transport vehicles in European countries. This paper deals with impacts on emissions production from the operation of the urban public transport fleet after its renewal. To what extent can the renewal of the urban public transport fleet in the city of Žilina contribute to increasing environmental sustainability in the way of reducing air pollution? The vehicle fleet change has partially consisted of vehicle traction system transition-diesel buses were subs… Show more

“…Renewable energy sources that meet national energy needs can provide energy services with zero or near-zero emissions of both air pollutants and greenhouse gases. Sustainable development requires methods and tools to measure and compare the impact of human activities on the environment for different solutions [20,22]. It is obvious that the excessive use of fossil fuels not only leads to an increase in the rate of depletion of their reserves but also has a significant negative impact on the environment, causing an increased threat to health and the threat of global climate change [23].…”

“…The third reason was that there was a move away from public transport to the use of private cars in the majority of cases. Despite the recent increase in the use of public transport in the previous years (see, for instance, [12]), the pandemic has led to a substantial decline in such transportation modes. This was not just for safety reasons but was also a consequence of the lack of public transport due to the pandemic restrictions [13].…”

“…As [15] referred to, case studies are helpful to introduce new theory based on empirical data. The case study method is used in many scientific works concerning the transport sector, for example [11][12][13]16,17].…”

“…This is due to societal demand, the transformation of people's thinking towards green resources and technologies, and also to the pressures on authorities on a global scale. Europe is no exception to this [2][3][4]. Liquefied natural gas imports to Europe still entail only a fraction of consumption.…”
