Environmental tritium around a new CANDU nuclear power plant

Abstract: Abstract. In the routine operation of a nuclear power plant radioactive wastes are generated. Excepting 3 H and H C, the quantities of radionuclides released during normal operation of CANDU 6, are smaller than emissions of other NPP. The tritium inventory and the tritium releases for classical and future (improved) CANDU 6 were theoretically evaluated and compared with the published data of CANDU 6 reactors with more than 10 years of operation. The tritium releases increases with time and no equilibrium is re… Show more

“…e HTO is transferred through the environment and through food chains without bioaccumulation that has much simpler pattern than the one shown by OBT. Over 10 years Paunescu, Galeriu and Mocanu (Paunescu et al, 2002) studied an area of 2500 m radius in the vicinity of a PHWR plant and concluded that the concentration of tritium in air, soil and plants was around 10e 100 times greater than the concentrations of the site before the nuclear power plant comes into operation. On the other hand, the soil water concentration remained under the limit to be used in cultivation.…”
