Environmentally Friendly Nonionic Surfactants Derived from Tannic Acid: Synthesis, Characterization and Surface Activity

Abstract: In order to discover new and safe surfactants with regard to the environment, new environmentally friendly nonionic surface active agents were synthesized by the reaction of tannic acid (as a natural product presents in several plants) and polyethylene glycol fatty acids containing different numbers of ethylene glycol units. The fatty acids were dodecanoic, hexadecanoic, octadecanoic and oleic acids. The chemical structures of the synthesized surfactants were confirmed using elemental analysis, infrared and 1 … Show more

“…It is clear that increasing the hydrophobic chain length in the surfactant molecule leads to an increase in their effectiveness at constant temperature as in surfactants (AQ 10 , AQ 12 and AQ 14 ). However, effectiveness values decreased for the Schiff base surfactants (AQ 16 and AQ 18 ) [21]. Hence, the chemical structure of the hydrophobic moieties influences the effectiveness values of the surfactants under investigation.…”

“…Permanent use of alkylphenol ethoxylate compounds usually causes pollution problems because they do not undergo biodegradation by micro-organisms present in soil and water. In the environmentally friendly surfactants, bacteria exploit these potentially useful resources of reduced carbon to derive energy and support growth [35][36][37][38].…”

“…In recent years, the cost of surfactants has steadily declined. In our previous works, we synthesized several types of surfactants which are environmentally friendly [11][12][13][14]. In the continuation of our research in surfactant science, we synthesized and studied the surface activity of nine nonionic surfactants obtained from the polymerization of triethanolamine.…”
