The object of this study was to demonstrate sites of alkaline phosphatase activity within the cellular elements of the inferior vagal (nodosal) ganglion of the cat and chronologically observe and describe alterations in enzyme activity following vagotomy. In control tissues alkaline phosphatase activity was localized to the wall of perineuronal blood vessels and the satellite cell cytoplasm which envelops the neuronal perikarya. In the experimental tissues alkaline phosphatase activity was increased in the above locations during the first 20 days following vagotomy then gradually declined to approximate control levels by 60 days post-operatively. The functional significance of changes in alkaline phosphatase activity occurring within an altered metabolic environment induced by vagotomy is discussed.

Light and electron microscopic investigations on the Mg⁺⁺- and Ca⁺⁺-activated ATPase of sheep and goat dorsal root ganglion have been carried out. Reaction products occur on plasma membranes and interfaces between neurons and sheath cells, between adjacent sheath cells and on the surface of unmyelinated fibers. Cytoplasmic protrusions of ganglion cells and numerous surface increasing invaginations of sheath membranes form close connections between neurons and sheath cells.

Dorsal roots and spinal ganglion cells of adult cats were studied for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) content. An inverse correlation exists between cell size and AChE activity; large neurons are AChE-negative whereas small ones are intensely AChE-positive. A few AChE-positive fibers were demonstrated in the dorsal roots. A possible correlation between AChE activity and substance P content of primary sensory neurons is discussed.
