EPDM Synthesis by the Ziegler Catalyst Cp*TiMe3/B(C6F5)3

Abstract: The utilization of the Ziegler catalyst Cp*TiMe3/B(C6F5)3 for the terpolymerization of ethylene, propylene and 5‐ethylidene‐2‐norbornene to give EPDM is investigated, and the major factors affecting yields, molecular weights, molecular weight distributions and compositional distributions of the EPDM polymers are assessed. High molecular weight polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions are obtained at ˜18°C.

“…A calibration curve for samples of known diene was also obtained to determine similar diene content in the obtained polymers. Characterizations of some selected polymers were performed using this technique, assignment of the peaks and the compositional analyses of the samples were being carried out based on published works 13, 18. Determination of the glass transition temperature was performed using DSC PL model STA 780 in temperature range of 25–150°C.…”

“…The homogeneous metallocene catalysts have been extensively investigated by many researchers 14–16. The studies show that metallocene catalyst exhibits higher activities and higher incorporation rates of termonomers in the polymer without any noticeable side reactions 8, 17–19. The production of EPDM grades can be modulated by proper choice of monomer ratio, reaction temperature, catalyst, cocatalysts and diene concentrations.…”

“…[21][22][23][24] In comparison with abundant researches of addition homopolymerization of parent NB and other important commercial product of 5-vinyl-2-norbornene, [25][26][27][28][29][30] the homopolymerization or copolymerization of ENB as main comonomer in vinyl addition polymerization pathway is rarely reported in the literature. 31 The polymer achieved in this way posseses the exocyclic C=C double bond functionalities on the polymer side chain, which will provide reactive site for the further functionalization by post-polymerizations, such as epoxidation, crosslinking reaction, and/or graft polymerization as demonstrated in EPDM, which will be beneficial for expanding its performances and applications.…”
