(‐)‐Epicatechin gallate, a metabolite of (‐)‐epigallocatechin gallate in grass carp, exhibits antiviral activity in vitro against grass carp reovirus

Abstract: (‐)‐Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a catechin found in green tea, has been demonstrated to exhibit activity against grass carp reovirus (GCRV). In the current study, we found that EGCG is partially transformed in vivo into (‐)‐epicatechin gallate (ECG), which differs from EGCG only by the absence of a hydroxyl group, and exhibits similar pharmacokinetic behaviour to that of EGCG. ECG is also a major catechin in green tea, but little information on its antiviral activity is available. Therefore, we assessed w… Show more

“…Additionally, EGCG has been reported to bind to the 67 kDa laminin receptor with a nanomolar Kd value (Tachibana et al., 2004). In our previous study, we found that EGCG could be targeted to the laminin receptor and used to specifically inhibit GCRV infection (Singh et al., 2011; Wang, Liu et al., 2016; Wang, Yu et al., 2016; Zhang et al., 2020). For the first time, we have shown that EGCG can used to control diseases in aquaculture.…”

“…Both EGCG and ECG have similar pharmacokinetic behaviour, and EGCG is partially converted to ECG in vivo. 28 And the ginsenoside Rg3 from ginseng showed an inhibitory effect on GCRV in grass carp ovarian (GCO) cells. 29 In this experiment, GCO cells were subjected to treatment with different concentrations of ginsenoside Rg3 (1, 10, and 100 μg/mL).…”

“…Zhang et al [109] evaluated the effect of epicatechin-3-gallate (ECG) on GCRV in vitro, which differs from EGCG only in the absence of hydroxyl groups. ECG and EGCG have similar pharmacokinetic behavior, and EGCG is partially converted to ECG in vivo.…”
