Epidemiologic mapping of Florida childhood cancer clusters

Abstract: There is evidence of spatial and space-time childhood cancer clustering in SF and NEF. This evidence is suggestive of the presence of possible predisposing factors in these cluster regions. Therefore, further study is needed to investigate these potential risk factors.

“…Specifically, the analyses of disease distribution and patterns are used within the study of AL research for different purposes: spatial distribution analysis of incidence and prevalence rates for diverse ethnic population groups [34][35][36] , mapping and analysis of hotspots for disease occurrence 37,38 , or analysis of clusters [39][40][41] .…”

“…also found by Amin et al (2010) but Figure 2 seems to indicate that the Northern cluster is more pronounced for the Caucasian race. Notably, fewer wombling boundaries are found for Caucasians than for African Americans (108 wombling boundaries vs. 206 boundaries were identified for Caucasians vs. African Americans).…”

“…The spatial scan statistic was successfully used by Amin et al (2010) to identify spatial clusters in the FAPTP data but this analysis seeks to also analyze the covariate information. Furthermore, the majority of model-based wombling techniques are not well suited to simultaneously analyze the spatial and covariate information in the FAPTP data.…”

“…Because of the CDC announcement, and perhaps partly because of our article, there was public concern and discussion, especially among parents of children with brain tumors in Palm Beach County. As a result, shortly after the publication of Amin et al (2010), I and my co-authors were asked to meet with the Surgeon General of Florida and her staff to discuss our findings.…”

“…These analyses used the updated dataset for the period 2000-2010. In parallel, the methods used in Amin et al (2010) have been applied to the updated data, and the results are published as part of this special issue of Statistics and Public Policy.…”
