Epidemiologic study of ankle fractures in a tertiary hospital

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the epidemiology of ankle fractures surgically treated at the Instituto de Ortopedia e Traumatologia do Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade de São Paulo. METHODS: Medical records of patients admitted with foot and ankle fractures between 2006 and 2011 were revised. Seventy three ankle fractures that underwent surgical treatment were identified. The parameters analyzed included age, gender, injured side, AO and Gustilo & Anderson classification, associated injuries, exposure, need to u… Show more

“…Sakaki et al demonstrate in their study in São Paulo of surgically-treated ankle fractures with a high amount of high-energy trauma that type C fractures compose about 37% of the fractures. More than half of them were high-energy traffic accidents [ 33 ]. Briet et al show in a similar study that all Lauge-Hansen classes except supination external rotation fractures (SER) is, in a majority of the cases, caused by high energy trauma.…”

“…Ankle injuries are mostly caused by low-energy rotation injury, and different from Pilon fracture induced by the axial load of distal tibial articular surface [17]. In the present study, low-energy injury induced by falls and sprains accounted for 77.8% (42/54).…”

“…As fratu ras do tornozelo são uma das mais frequentes. Normalmente, resultam de traumas torcionais de baixa energia, mas como o número de acidentes de trânsito aumentou, a gravidade das fraturas e a energia do trauma cresceram de forma constante (1)(2)(3)(4)(5) .…”
