“…Veterinarians and veterinary assistants showed to be largely exposed to Brucella spp., totalizing 189 individuals with positive diagnostic of brucellosis. Those infections, probably related to PLOS NEGLECTED TROPICAL DISEASES their occupational activities, were reported by fifteen articles [2,19,23,24,28,31,35,43,[50][51][52][53][54][55][56], mostly from Asia (n = 121), Europe (n = 40), and Americas (n = 27) and the minority from Africa (n = 1). Manipulation of live attenuated anti-brucellosis vaccines, described in seven studies, was the most reported exposure source (Table 3).…”

“…As part of this review, we conducted a reference search on PubMed for brucellosis publications between 2001 and 2018. Out of 14,304 publications found, only 1.5% pertained to health consequences of brucellosis on women's reproductive life, which included abortions, premature delivery, intrauterine death, congenital brucellosis, misscarriages, neonatal brucellosis [58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65]. A preliminary review of these publications only detected one instance where gender issues rather than sex-related health consequences where examined: "One distinct characteristic of the disease in this country is that the most cases are noted in female patients, by contrast to the rest of the world possibly reflecting an increased transmission as a foodborne disease (via milk cosumption) or increased participation of women in procedures associated with brucellosis transmission (eg.…”

“…It recommends integrative approaches to health by expanding interdisciplinary collaboration across these highly interlinked components ( 11 13 ). The participation of representatives from Malta and Serbia in the EU COST action TD 1404 “Network for Evaluation of One Health”—these being two countries where efforts to control or eradicate brucellosis have been mostly successful: in Malta during the last decade of the twentieth century after several failed attempts ( 9 , 14 ), and in Serbia during the first decade of the twenty first century ( 15 , 16 )—led to this study. The objectives of this comparative study are 2-fold.…”

“…No data is available for the southern part of Serbia. The number of infected humans and animals significantly decreased in northern Serbia (Vojvodina province) after 2006, and in southern Serbia after 2009, and overall Brucellosis incidence now shows a declining trend ( 16 ). In Serbia, brucellosis may still occur in animals if these are illegally imported in the country ( 7 ).…”
