“…Given that participants in this study were identified on hospital presentation it could be expected that the prevalence in our population is higher than that reported elsewhere however this does not appear to be the case. Similar prevalence for hypertension, between 60% and 70% have been reported for hypertension in older community dwelling populations internationally (Ma et al, 2015, Polsinelli et al, 2017). A longitudinal study by Egan et al using the The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANEs) data showed that the prevalence of hypertension among those aged over 60 years has remained consistently between 60 and 70% since 2008 (Egan et al, 2010).…”

“…The present study found that the prevalence of frailty in hypertensive older adults was high in rural areas, which was in accordance with our previous studies . Participants in rural areas in China have a poor financial situation, poor nutrition, and poor hypertension control, these factors could lead to worse physical function. We have reported the prevalence of frailty in Chinese community‐dwelling population to be 7.1% and 9.9% in our previous studies, moreover, the prevalence of frailty in older hypertensive adults was much higher (19.6%) in this study.…”

Details of the sampling scheme have been previously published . The study was approved by the Xuanwu Hospital's Committee on Ethics of Human Experiments.…”

“…For example, we reported that the prevalence of hypertension in Beijing in 2004 was 59.8%, but the awareness rate was only 55.8%. 23 The situation is similar with other chronic diseases, which indicates FRAIL may underestimate the prevalence of frailty in China. Further studies on the comparison of the FSQ and FRAIL on the prevalence of frailty in Chinese populations are warranted.…”
