Epidemiological profile of Dupuytren’s disease in Taiwan (Ethnic Chinese): a nationwide population-based study

Abstract: BackgroundThe epidemiologic profile of ethnic Chinese patients with Dupuytren’s disease is unknown. We therefore investigated the epidemiology of Dupuytren’s disease using Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database.MethodsPatients who filed claims for treatment for Dupuytren’s disease between January 2000 and December 2011 were identified in the database. Age- and gender-specific incidences were estimated by dividing the incidence number by population data.ResultsWe identified 1,078 patients with Dup… Show more

“…In Asia, Egawa and colleagues 5 reported that the prevalence of DD in Japan was 19%, and recently Taiwan researchers reported a prevalence of 4.52 per 100,000 population. 7 McFarlane 14 pointed out that the unusually high prevalence of DD in Japan reported by Egawa et al 5 might be related to their accurate diagnosis of minimal disease. Their patients were actually elderly residents of nursing homes and few had enough contracture to warrant surgery.…”

“… 4 However, the epidemiology of DD in Asia has been reported only in Japan in the past decades, 5 6 and recently in Taiwan. 7 Because of this relatively small number of Asian studies, the prevalence of DD in Caucasians appears more prominent.…”

“…In our survey, the ethnic distribution among Taiwanese was not considered in the RFTP development. The prevalence and transmission patterns of diseases were identified to be associated with variation in the migratory history, community distribution, or socioeconomic status of the major ethnic groups in Taiwan [ 28 31 ]. However, it was unclear if the ethnic composition among Taiwanese would be a factor influencing a local RFTP, as to our best knowledge a significant variation among ethnic groups in Taiwan was not yet confirmed in the face width and face length, the most critical facial dimensions underlying the RFTPs.…”

“…Three examples of diseases with contrasting risk between populations, primarily for middle-age-onset, are Dupuytren's disease (DD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and lupus erythematosus (LE). DD heritability was determined by Larsen et al [72] as 80%, with extremely varied prevalence, affecting at older ages 22-32% of men in populations originating from Northern European countries [57], and significantly lower prevalence in populations from other origins, with the lowest prevalence in Korea [73], Taiwan and China [74] at 100-1000 times lower prevalence than in Northern European populations. According to Molokhia and McKeigue [75], West Africans have a higher risk of LE than Europeans, and Native Americans have a higher RA risk than Europeans.…”
