Epidemiological study of epilepsy by monitoring prescriptions of antiepileptic drugs

Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate a simple and effective method of acquiring epidemiological information about epilepsy. Data on antiepileptic drug prescriptions was collected, the utilization pattern being based on defined daily doses (DDDs). Antiepileptic drugs are epidemiological tracers of epilepsy due to their chronic and highly specific usage. Consequently, a prevalence rate for the whole population may be obtained by using DDDs. Data on antiepileptic drug prescriptions for a period of 6 months in 199… Show more

“…Our data on AED prescribing patterns are confirmed by previous studies conducted in US and in Europe [7,10,11,13,14,20]. The incremental pattern of prescription of gabapentin is in agreement with a recent pharmaco‐economic analysis carried out in the years 1994–2000 in the US [21].…”

“…The increase of AED use during the years 2004–06 is in line with several European drug utilization studies that explored the trend of AED prescriptions [3, 4, 22, 29, 30]. In particular, a recent survey, performed in an Italian general population during 2000–05, showed a prevalence ranging from 11.4 to 34.8 in patients over 65 years [4].…”

“…Shackleton et al demonstrated that for almost 50% of the patients on carbamazepine monotherapy, the indication was not epilepsy 11 . In several of the epidemiological studies, corrections were made for off-label use by applying a cor-rection factor of 0.68 8,14 . For new AEDs, the correction factor is not yet known, but it is likely that there is offlabel use of these compounds as well.…”
