Epidemiological Study of Malignant Gliomas in Korea Using Nationwide Dataset from 2007 to 2017

Abstract: Background The purpose of the study was to investigate the incidence, prevalence, and survival of malignant gliomas (MGs) using population-based Korean National Health Insurance Database (NHID) data. Methods Using the Korean NHID, we identified patients with MG as C71 codes in KCD 5–7 according to ICD-10 from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2017. Epidemiological characteristics of MG, including annual incidence, prevalence, mortality rates, and survival rates, were coll… Show more

“… 26 Other factors, such as smoking, obesity, and family history of cancer (genetic tendency), may also be considered as important factors. However, based on similar studies, 21 27 28 we considered income, residence, and DM would be sufficient for interpreting the data. Cancer incidence and mortality are presented as the number of cases per 1000 persons, adjusted in consideration of the observation period (person-years).…”

“…Sebuah penelitian menyebutkan manifestasi klinis yang paling sering ditemukan pada penderita glioma adalah kejang dan kelainan kognitif. 14 Sakit kepala pada penderita glioma merupakan gejala yang tidak umum. 14 Pasien yang mengalami kejang memiliki umur yang lebih muda daripada pasien yang mengalami gangguan kognitif dan ditemukan korelasi yang bermakna antara grading dari tumor dan manifestasi klinis dari penderita glioma.…”

“…The median overall survival time of low-grade glioma, anaplastic glioma, and glioblastoma were 78.1, 37.6, and 14.4 months in China [ 8 ], while in England and Wales, the median survival for astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and oligoastrocytoma was 4.6 months, 42 months, and 35.8 months, respectively [ 9 ]. The 1-, 3-, 5-, and 10-year survival rates for malignant gliomas were estimated at 63.4%, 46.2%, 39.4%, and 34.8% in South Korea [ 10 ], while the 2-year survival for Swedish people that were diagnosed with high-grade glioma was 19,5% [ 11 ]. According to the previous study, the 1-year survival for patients with malignant CNS tumors in Kazakhstan was 56.5% overall, 79.5% for lower grades, and 33.1% for grades 3 and 4 [ 12 ].…”
