Epidemiology and Outcomes of Acute Decompensated Heart Failure in Children

Abstract: Background: Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is a highly morbid condition among adults. Little is known about outcomes in children with ADHF. We analyzed the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consortium registry to determine the epidemiology, contemporary treatments, and predictors of mortality in critically ill children with ADHF. Methods: Cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) patients ≤18 years of age meeting Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Consort… Show more

“…We next wanted to investigate the specificity and immunodominance of the polyclonal antibody response to the subunits of spike due to its potential as a target for the development of vaccines and therapeutics. This concept is based upon vaccines developed against SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV 15,25,26 and the strongly neutralizing monoclonal antibodies that have been identified as spike specific 2732 . To address specificity and immunodominance, we analyzed serum samples from 16 laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection cases as determined by qRT-PCR, with 11 of the 16 subjects being admitted to the hospital.…”

“…However, the two groups seem to be relatively similar when comparing basic demographics, triage levels, and cardiac diagnoses. The overall cohort is likely a reasonable representation since the baseline demographics and eventual outcomes (including mortality and mechanical support use) are similar compared to the non-congenital heart disease patients of a large, multi-center registry-based pediatric series of acute HF patients admitted to the cardiac ICU [13].…”

“…Cardiac dysfunction is a common finding in pediatric ICUs, especially dedicated PCICUs [9]. Ventricular systolic function can be impaired for a variety of etiologies, ranging from congenital to acquired, in patients with and without congenital heart disease (CHD) [10,11].…”
