Epidemiology and patterns of lower limb injuries at a tertiary care hospital in Ahmedabad

Abstract: Introduction: In the recent era of trauma, about one million people get seriously injured annually. Majority of them suffer from lower limb injuries. Due to lack of trauma registry in India, prediction models are not much effective. The aim of our study was to derive basic epidemiological parameters for lower limb injuries which can be used to develop better prediction models to reduce morbidities and mortalities. Methods: We conducted an observational study on isolated lower limb injuries without any musculos… Show more

“…Our study showed that male patients had higher incidence of hip fracture as compared to female patients. Isolated hip fractures were more common in right side as compared to left side as previously shown in the study conducted by Goel et al [9]. As a cause of injury, 91.7 percent of patients had history of fall down and 8.3percent of patients had history of road traffic accident.…”

“…With increasing age there is decrease in eye sight and loss of balance which leads to fall down resulting in hip fracture and also with rapid development of roadways and technology there is increase in motor vehicle accidents resulting in increased amount of trauma, mainly to lower limb. Quite a few studies have observed the epidemiology and patterns of injuries in lower limbs and have found injuries around the hip to be very common in elderly group [9]. However, very little information is available regarding the mortality predictive model with hip injuries and co-morbidities.…”

“…Road traffic accidents are the most common cause of this type of complex injuries. 2 The incidence of road traffic accidents are on the rise and are often associated with complex life-threatening conditions and extensive soft tissue damage. Management of these injuries varies according to the type and extent of bony and soft tissue involvement.…”
