Epidemiology and Prognosis of Primary Periocular Sweat Gland Carcinomas

Abstract: Sweat gland carcinomas tend to grow slowly and be present for several months to years before diagnosis. “…Primary mucinous tumors of the periorbital region have also been described. Primary mucinous tumors of the eyelids are relatively indolent and have an incidence on the order of 0.7 per million [23][24][25][26]. As both metastatic and primary mucinous tumors can present in the orbital/periorbital region distinguishing between these rare tumors can be challenging [27].…”

“…EMPSGC is a rare tumor and like other sweat gland carcinomas tend to grow slowly; tumors of the American Joint Committee on Cancer category T2b or less are reported associated with better outcomes. [ 9 ] In the Indian scenario, even though extremely uncommon, it should be considered as a differential when encountered with a suspicious eyelid mass.…”

“…The sweat glands of the eyelid can give rise to various pathologies. Syringomas are benign lesions of the eyelid sweat glands, which are more common in women and classically present as crops of small, firm, skin colored papules (Ciarloni et al 2016). A hydrocystoma is a translucent cyst located near the lid margin, usually resulting from blockage of the sweat glands of the eyelid.…”
