Epidemiology and survival of non-malignant and malignant meningiomas in middle-aged females, 2004-2018

Abstract: BackgroundThe incidence of meningioma is disparate to sex: meningiomas are more common in women than in men, especially in middle-aged women. Understanding the epidemiology and survival of middle-aged women with meningiomas would help estimate their public health impacts and optimize risk stratification.MethodsData on middle-aged (35–54 years) female patients with meningiomas between 2004 and 2018 were obtained from the SEER database. Age-adjusted incidence rates per 100 000 population-years were calculated. K… Show more

“… 3 Spinal meningiomas are one of the most common intradural, extramedullary tumours (idem), 4 accounting for 12% of all meningiomas and 25%–45% of all intradural spinal tumours. The incidence rateof meningioma is 0.19‐0.35/100000, mostly in the middle‐aged and elderly population of 40‐70, more women than men, the proportion of women is 75%‐85%, 5 , 6 the preferred surgical treatment, the general prognosis is very good. The early symptoms of meningioma are not obvious, and generally present with corresponding dysfunction at the level of spinal cord compression.…”
