Epidemiology and treatment of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the minor salivary glands: A meta-analytic study

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the epidemiological aspects of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and to evaluate the different therapeutic possibilities as well as the percentage of survival. Study Design: A retrospective, meta-analytic, observational study was carried out by selecting a total of 13 articles, which provided a sample size of 263 cases of patients who had been diagnosed with ACC in the minor salivary glands. Results: ACC was found to be more common among women (56.5%) and the average age at diagnosis was 5… Show more

“…Histologically they have a basaloid epithelium clustered in nests in a hyaline stroma. ACC can be categorized into three growth patterns, cribriform, tubular, and solid patterns [48]. The most common histologic subtype is the cribriform type (44%), characterized by a "Swiss cheese" pattern of vacuolated areas.…”

“…Since majority of the patients in this study underwent RT we were unable to evaluate the relationship between OS, recurrence and RT. The role of chemotherapy for adenoid cystic carcinoma is still controversial [24]. In conclusion ACC is relatively rare and it may result in recurrence even many years post-diagnosis.…”

“…40 The solid pattern of ACC is believed to be the most aggressive form with poor prognosis. 39 Solid ACC is characterized histopathologically by tumor nests or islands completely filled with basaloid cells without cystic spaces. multicystic ameloblastoma (SMA) with only 11 cases reported in the literature so far.…”
