Epidemiology of Adult Fractures in Eastern Croatia by Cause of Injury, Fracture Location and Type of Treatment

Abstract: This retrospective study investigated the impact of age on fracture occurrence through the comparison of two patient groups, 17-64 and 64+ age groups. Study data covered all fractures treated at a large hospital in eastern Croatia. A total of 15,519 patients with fractures were treated at the trauma department (inpatient and outpatient), with a total of 17,257 fractures presented, 71% managed as outpatients and 29% as inpatients. “…Osteoporosis was defined as deterioration of bone mass and is associated with increased risk of fracture, bone fractures being manifest in females over 65 years of age and to a lesser extent in males over 65 81 . Osteoporotic fractures pose a major problem worldwide; therefore, the Bone Marker Standards Working Group 82 proposes the specific markers of bone resorption and bone formation be taken into consideration in all future studies.…”

“…1,2 The incidence of ankle fractures is about 112-187 per 100,000 people annually, which has increased 319% in the past three decades. 1,2 Ankle fractures (42.6%) have a medial malleolar component, which plays an important role in the configuration and stability of ankle joints. 3,4 The current standard classification of medial malleolar fractures is the Herscovici classification, [5][6][7] which divides medial malleolar fractures into four types according to the anteroposterior radiograph: type-A, avulsion fracture at the tip of medial malleolar; type-B, a fracture located between the tip and tibial plafond; type-C, a fracture located at the level of plafond; and type-D, a fracture extended vertically to the metaphyseal region (Fig.…”
