Epidemiology of Balance Symptoms and Disorders in the Community

Abstract: Symptoms of dizziness and vertigo are common in the adult population, and data give a coherent picture of community epidemiology. These data can inform rational service planning and much-needed clinical trials in this field. There are insufficient data on specific balance disorders, especially peripheral vestibular disorders such as vestibular neuritis and its long-term sequelae.

“…Balance disorders increase risk of falls [3], especially in the elderly, with high associated morbidity, mortality, and consequent economic burden [4]. A recent review [5] reports a lifetime prevalence of 17 to 30%. Bisdorff [6] using a more analytic survey for vertigo, dizziness, and unsteadiness, resulting from a range of vestibular and non-vestibular conditions, found a 1- year prevalence of 48.3%, 35.6% and 39.1%, respectively.…”

“…[117][118][119] Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey demonstrated a 12-fold increase in the risk for falls among older individuals who were clinically symptomatic (reporting dizziness). 118 Among community-dwelling adults aged >65 years, 1 in 3 falls each year.…”

“…It is essential to have a good understanding of the epidemiology of the conditions and their symptomatic presentation in the community. Much literature in this area is based around specialist clinic and hospital experience that is likely to be subject to bias [2].…”
