“…The current results are consistent with results from comparisons of Thai and U.S. children (Weisz et al, 1989(Weisz et al, , 1987, which provide the closest comparison to our study, both in terms of the proximity and similarity of the populations and use of the same measures. In the study of Thai teacher reports (Weisz et al, 1989), Thai children were rated by their teachers as being higher than U.S. children on both Internalizing and Externalizing.…”

“…The strongest cross-cultural similarity was found between 3,333 American and Dutch 4-to 16-year-olds, for whom the mean Total Problem scores differed by less than half a point on a 240-point scale (Achenbach, Verhulst, Baron, & Akkerhuis, 1987b). In a comparison between 960 Thai and American 6-to ll-year-olds, Thai children obtained significantly higher mean Total Problem scores than U.S. children (24.2 vs. 20.8), primarily reflecting higher Thai scores on internalizing items (Weisz et al, 1987). However, this difference of 3.4 points in the Total Problem score accounted for only 1.28% of variance and was a small effect according to Cohen's (1988) criteria.…”

“…Weisz et al (e.g., McCarty et al, 1999;Weisz, Suwanlert, Chaiyasit, Weiss, et al, 1987;Weisz et al, 1988) have reported concerning how culture makes a difference in how problem behaviors are expressed and how problems are coped with. In a group of studies on cultural differences in problem behaviors [e.g., as indicated on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), a common parent-report form, or by referral to a mental health clinic], Weisz et al (summarized in Weisz, McCarty, Eastman, Chaiyasit, & Suwanlert, 1997) found important differences between US and Thai youth.…”

“…The "problem suppression-facilitation model" (Weisz et al, 1987) considers suppressing or inhibiting the expression as one source of internalizing problems. Asian/Eastern values encourage emotional control and restraint (suppression) while American/Western values encourage free and open emotional expression ( Soto, Levenson, & Ebling, 2005;Butler & Gross, 2009).…”
