Epidemiology of dengue fever in Guatemala

Abstract: Dengue fever occurs worldwide and about 1% of cases progress to severe haemorrhage and shock. Dengue is endemic in Guatemala and its surveillance system could document long term trends. We analysed 17 years of country-wide dengue surveillance data in Guatemala to describe epidemiological trends from 2000 to 2016.Data from the national dengue surveillance database were analysed to describe dengue serotype frequency, seasonality, and outbreaks. We used Poisson regression models to compare the number of cases eac… Show more

“…Dengue virus (DENV), a mosquito borne flavivirus has been considered a worldwide health threat since up to 350 million individuals live in high-risk transmission areas. The rate of Dengue infection has been estimated to be more than 390 million cases annually in tropical and subtropical countries, of which 96 million manifest clinical pathologies [ 1 , 2 ]. Besides the health problem, DENV is a global economic burden [ 3 ].…”

“…In Central American countries, such as Guatemala and Barbados, dengue is considered endemic and has burdened health systems [ 85 ]. In Guatemala, the largest dengue outbreak occurred in 2010, with serotype DENV-2 alone resulting in the notification of 1080 cases [ 86 ]. In Barbados, 3994 cases were already reported between 2008 and 2016, and different serotypes circulated during this period, with an emphasis on DENV-1 and DENV-2 [ 87 ].…”

“…The second outbreak did not occur until 1987 in the rainy season of Southern Guatemala’s Escuintla. Since that time, outbreaks have been occurring more often and at increased incidence rates with the largest dengue outbreak occurring in 2010 [ 16 , 19 ]. Signor et al (2020) studied 17 years of dengue fever surveillance data in Guatemala (2000 to 2016) in order to describe and identify epidemiological trends [ 16 ].…”
