Epidemiology of gastric cancer

Abstract: The incidence and mortality of gastric cancer have fallen dramatically in US and elsewhere over the past several decades. Nonetheless, gastric cancer remains a major public health issue as the fourth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Demographic trends differ by tumor location and histology. While there has been a marked decline in distal, intestinal type gastric cancers, the incidence of proximal, diffuse type adenocarcinomas of the gastric cardia has been increasing, … Show more

“…GC has high mortality and is the second most common cause of cancer‐related death worldwide 20. The epidemiology study demonstrated that the environmental factors and lifestyles are vital etiology factors of GC 21. Numerous genetic modifications contribute to the onset of GC, including oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, as well as growth factors 22…”

“…Gastric cancer remains a major public health issue as the fourth most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide (Hohenberger and Gretschel, 2003;Crew and Neugut, 2006). Of the two histological subtypes of gastric cancers, the incidence of proximal, diffuse-type gastric adenocarcinoma has been increasing, particularly in Western countries.…”
