Epidemiology of hypertension in Croatia and worldwide

Abstract: Uvod: Arterijska hipertenzija predstavlja globalnu epidemiju i vodeći čimbenik rizika za smrtnost i dizabilitet na globalnoj razini. U ovom radu analiziramo razlike u prevalenciji, svjesnosti, terapiji, i kontroli arterijske hipertenzije u svijetu i Hrvatskoj te trendove u prevalenciji povišenog arterijskog tlaka. Materijal i metode:Za potrebe ove analize pretraživana je literatura iz MEDLINE baze s epidemiološkim istraživanjima arterijske hipertenzije i studije globalnog opterećenja bolestima. Za graničnu vri… Show more

“…pressure values ≥ 180/110 mmHg could be explained by the fact that a small number of people are aware of their disease. A study conducted in 2003 in Croatia showed that more than 50% of patients were unaware of their illness, 48.4% received treatment, and in only 14.8% of patients achieved satisfactory pressure value ( 13 ). There is a clear correlation between grade of arterial hypertesion and its duration with the onset of cardiovascular diseases and incidents, while the value of blood pressure and the duration of arterial hypertension is important ( 4 , 10 , 14 ).…”

“…Arterial hypertension is one of the main risk factors for morbidity and mortality worldwide (Williams et al 2018). Approximately 40% of the population older than 25 has high blood pressure, which accounts for around one billion people, and at least 1 % of those patients will develop hypertensive crisis (Rodriguez et al 2010, Kralj et al 2017). Use of anxiolytics in hypertensive urgency in our data analysis has shown to be useful.…”

“…Hypertensive emergency (HE) is acute elevation of blood pressure (SBP > 180 mmHg, DBP > 120 mmHg) accompanied by end organ damage primarily in eyes, brain, heart, aorta, kidneys (Williams et al 2018, Baumann 2016 Hypertensive urgency (HU) is defined as acute elevation of blood pressure above often used arbitrary limit of SBP > 180 mmHg and/or DBP > 120 mmHg, without end organ damage (Baumann 2016). The prevalence of arterial hypertension in general public adults in Croatia is about 37.5% (Kralj et al 2017). Around 5% of patient visits to the out-of-hospital emergency medical service (EMS) units in Croatia is associated with hypertension, but mostly without hypertensive emergency (Simi et al 2017).…”
