Epidemiology of idiopathic glomerular disease: A prospective study

Abstract: In this study incidence rates of idiopathic glomerular disease in 1.5 X 10(6) Dutch adults between 16 and 65 years of age were determined, as well as the prevalence of these diseases in terms of indication for renal biopsy. The study was conducted between 1978 and 1985; indications for renal biopsy in decreasing hierarchical order were recently discovered uremia, nephrotic syndrome, chronic hematuria of less than two years duration with or without proteinuria or disturbed renal function, and chronic proteinuri… Show more

“…Renal biopsy specimens were processed for light microscopy and immunofluorescence as previously described. 3,4 Biopsy specimens were termed pauci-immune when immunofluorescence was 2+ or less (on a scale of 0-4+) for any immunoglobulin or complement. 12 Renal biopsy specimens were scored independently and blinded from clinical information by two observers (P.V.B.V.…”

“…In contrast, Berden et al classified 13 of their 100 patients (13%) in the sclerotic group. In our study, we sought to make an early diagnosis of GN in patients with erythrocyturia and proteinuria, 3,4 possibly resulting in fewer sclerotic glomeruli.…”

“…1 Natural history studies with follow-up of at least three years indicate that approximately 50% of patients with nephrotic iMN develop renal failure. [2][3][4] It has been demonstrated that a restrictive treatment strategy which limits immunosuppressive treatment to patients with established renal insufficiency results in good longterm renal survival.…”
