Epidemiology of inflammatory bowel diseases from west to east

Abstract: The incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) show considerable variation over time and across geographical regions. The first studies on the epidemiology of IBD were mainly from traditionally high-incidence areas, such as North America, and northern and western Europe. In the last two decades, more and more studies have been published from Eastern European and Asian countries with increasing incidence rates from some regions. According to recent studies, the high incidence and prevalence of… Show more

“…However, since the start of the biologics era, absolute drug lag has been decreasing in Japan and other Asian countries not only due to the development of biologics but also due to the recent surge in development of drugs first approved before the biologics era. This may be because delays in initiating drug development, which constitute a major contributor to drug lag, have been reduced due to the elevated clinical importance and expanded drug market resulting from an increased IBD population worldwide [2,3] and the associated increase in the Asian population [3][4][5].…”

“…IBD has long been common in Western countries, but it has DOI: 10.1159/000491878 been increasing in its prevalence mainly in newly industrializing countries since the start of the 21st century [2,3] and particularly rapidly in Japan and other Asian countries [3][4][5]. IBD is becoming a major social problem because adults of working age often need to spend time taking care of themselves because of the disease [6,7] and treatment is expensive [8][9][10].…”

“…The pathological analysis revealed chronic inflammation associated with necrosis and mild-to-moderate dysplasia in the mucosa of the sigmoid colon, as well as chronic mucosal inflammation and stromal neutrophil/eosinophil infiltration in the transverse colon (Figure 1). The patient’s practice of taking the compound Qingdai pills at home remained undisclosed and a diagnosis of IBD was made[5,6]. Intravenous rehydration and oral mesalazine (1 g, q.i.d.)…”
