Epidemiology of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus at a Pediatric Healthcare System, 1991–2003

Abstract: CA-MRSA is well established in this pediatric population. Although no discernable changes in CA- or HA-MRSA case characteristics were documented during the study period, significant changes were observed in CA-MRSA isolate characteristics, indicating that this pathogen continues to evolve.

“…CA-MRSA invasive infections in pediatric patients appear to follow an increasing trend of publications worldwide [8,9,12,18,25]. Pediatricians should be alert that empirical therapy with antistaphylococcal β-lactams may be insufficient in CA-MRSA infections.…”

“…Invasive infections due to community-acquired methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) have been increasingly reported [18,41]. Αll these isolates harbor SCCmec type IV that confers resistance to β-lactam antistaphylococcal antibiotics and possess Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) gene that has been associated with necrotizing pneumonia and aggressive soft tissue infections [12,15,17,31].…”

“…Over the past decade, CA-MRSA infection has become a quickly growing problem in pediatric hospitals [29,31]. As there is no definite consensus about why otherwise healthy children acquire these resistant bacteria, we decided to evaluate the clinical and microbiological characteristics of CA-MRSA isolates recovered from 138 consecutive patients with SSTIs.…”

“…There have also been cases of infection caused by CA-MRSA strains acquired in connection with staying in hospital 52 . In 2007 a paper was published reporting that with the help of retrospective investigation of S. aureus strain isolates from 1991-2003, there were identifi ed MRSA strains with a CA-MRSA pattern at a child clinic already in 1991 20 .…”
