Epidemiology of pelvic and acetabular trauma in a Dublin tertiary hospital: a 10-year experience

Abstract: From our study, the typical patient profile is one of a male in his 30's involved in an RTA requiring acetabular surgery. This is in accordance with previously published international data and highlights the need for specialised units, training in this subspecialty and allocation of resources.

“…Of note, there was a noticeable increase in the incidence of surgically treated acetabular fractures during our study period (2005 to 2012) in China, while our data and most papers from Europe and the USA quote a constant incidence [1,3,8]. This change in China may be due to the growing number of cars per capita, a booming economy with a significant development of the construction industry, and a migration from the countryside to the cities.…”

“…In recent years, a considerable number of studies related to the care and immediate or late complications of this type of injury have been published, which is undoubtedly praiseworthy, since they increasingly inform and guide the professionals involved in such care, characterizing the importance and severity of the injury, especially in polytrauma cases 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. However, a much smaller proportion of publications are related to epidemiological data, regional or otherwise, about fractures and injuries of the pelvic ring, which also have very important information, especially regarding the characterization and appropriateness of care for such an injury 3, 10, 11. Therefore, this study sought to analyze and compare various data, such as age, mechanism and site of injury, type of fracture, emergency interventions, and definitive treatment, among others, referring to the cases of fractures and injuries of the pelvic ring that occurred in this region and were treated in this service.…”

“…Quite often, such patients suffer from polytrauma [1,2]. As soon as the pelvic ring fracture has been diagnosed (commonly by polytrauma CT), the surgeon must decide on the specific time and type of repair/stabilisation and/ or the pelvic surgery technique.…”
