“…9,11 ►Table 8 is a review table of the available literature describing the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with septic wrist. 1,3,10,[12][13][14] Interestingly, our current study found that a higher synovial WBC was associated with septic wrist arthritis (average 123,691) when compared with nonseptic wrists (p < 0.001; average 56,982) and crystalline arthropathy (p = 0.002; average 64,733). Although the optimal synovial WBC threshold was found to be 87,750 cells/µL, and while this value should be interpreted with caution, this may provide preliminary data supporting the development of a threshold cutoff for synovial WBC in predicting septic wrist arthritis.…”

“…Several studies have reported a higher risk of septic wrist arthritis in patients who are immunocompromised, rheumatoid, older than 70 years, or have a history of trauma or recent infection. 1,7,10,12 Our study identified only smoking history (p = 0.02) and IVDU (0.006) to be associated with septic wrist arthritis and septic crystalline arthritis, respectively. It should also be noted that the second and third lowest synovial WBCs were in immunosuppressed patients with septic wrists, with 10,000 and 24,250 synovial WBC, respectively.…”

“…Allerdings finden sich bei akuten Gelenkinfektionen an Hand und Handgelenk nicht selten normwertige Entzündungsparameter, sodass diese kein Ausschlusskriterium darstellen [7]! Die Diagnose und Indikation zur operativen Therapie sollten daher keinesfalls nur in Abhängigkeit der Entzün-dungsparameter gestellt werden [8,27].…”

“…However, in areas of high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, just outside the meningococcal belt in the Gabonese Republic of Africa, HIV-infected patients were not found to be at higher risk for Neisseria meningococcal disease 13. Furthermore, a small study by Skeete et al14 showed patients with a compromised immune system were not more likely to have normal peripheral white blood cell (WBC) count during septic arthritis.…”
