Epidemiology of Ulcerative Colitis in Western Norway

Abstract: The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) in the three counties that compose Western Norway was registered in a prospective study during the years 1984 and 1985. Both inpatients and outpatients were included. Five hundred and fifty general practitioners and 12 hospitals participated in the study. A total of 239 patients were diagnosed in this area with 807,000 inhabitants, giving a mean annual incidence of 14.8 per 100,000. For patients between 30 and 35 years of age the age-specific incidence rate was 31.2. Th… Show more

“…Age-specific incidence rates of CD per 100,000 inhabitants in the studied population of southeastern Norway in 1990. Consistent with previous studies [4,18] we found a slightly higher male/female ratio for UC and the reverse for CD. The pattern of age-specific incidence rates and the extent of disease at diagnosis are comparable with findings of previous epidemiological studies [1][2][3][4]7], In cases with CD, however, the proportion of disease con fined to the colon is higher than recorded in most other studies [5,18].…”

The validity of our findings is, however, supported by the thorough evaluation of the extent of dis ease at diagnosis: a total colonoscopy was performed on 76% of the patients with CD, while 73% of the patients underwent radiology examinations of the small bowel.…”

“…The incidence of ulcerative colitis was 14.8/10 5 , 12.8/10 5 , and 13.6/10 5 , respectively [4][5][6]. Diagnosis is made by an endoscopic examination (colonoscopy) with biopsy.…”
