Epidermoid Cyst of the Buccal Mucosa: An Uncommon Entity. Case report and literature review

Abstract: Epidermoid, dermoid and teratoid cysts are nonodontogenic benign lesions derived from the germinative epithelium, appearing any where of the body. In the oral cavity, these are uncommon and account for less than 0.01% of all the oral cysts. These cysts often remain asymptomatic for years however can become acutely symptomatic.

“…These included 25 aPDT studies, 15 PBM therapy studies and one study which had combined aPDT and PBM therapy study protocol. Twenty‐five studies were excluded based on their title and abstracts [systematic reviews ( n = 5) [67, 68, 101–103], literature reviews ( n = 3) [65, 104, 105], aPDT case series/reports ( n = 8) [59, 60, 106–111], PBM therapy case series/reports ( n = 7) [112–118], conference abstract ( n = 1) [119], letter to editor ( n = 1) [120]]. Therefore, 26 studies qualified for full text reading (aPDT studies: n = 17, PBM therapy studies: n = 8, aPDT +PBM therapy study: n = 1) (inter‐reviewer agreement, κ = 0.96).…”

“…Yet, few cases have been reported in the literature without any clear etiology. 1 The proposed mechanism for the formation of such cysts was that of a posttraumatic migration and “implantation” of the keratinizing epidermis into deep tissues; however, a clear injury preceding the formation of the cyst was almost never evident.…”

“…To date, only approximately 10 cases of acquired epidermal cysts of the buccal mucosa have been reported in the literature without a clear etiology. 1 We, here, report another unusual case of an epidermal cyst formation on the lip that might have developed following an autologous fat transplant, giving possible explanations about its etiopathogenesis.…”
