Abstract: Deletion of native centromeres in the human fungal pathogen Cryptococcus deuterogattii leads to neocentromere formation. Native centromeres span truncated transposable elements, while neocentromeres span actively expressed genes. Neocentromeres in cen10∆ mutants are unstable and chromosome-chromosome fusions occur.
