Epigenetic signatures of attachment insecurity and childhood adversity provide evidence for role transition in the pathogenesis of perinatal depression

Abstract: Early life adversity and insecure attachment style are known risk factors for perinatal depression. The biological pathways linking these experiences, however, have not yet been elucidated. We hypothesized that overlap in patterns of DNA methylation in association with each of these phenomena could identify genes and pathways of importance. Specifically, we wished to distinguish between allostatic-load and role-transition hypotheses of perinatal depression. We conducted a large-scale analysis of methylation pa… Show more

“…DNAm allows researchers to study how early life environments can "get under the skin" (Boyce & Kobor, 2015) to potentially result in dynamic variation in physiology, behavior, and health outcomes -ideal for studying as a potential biomarker of early attachment experiences. Understandably then, there have been a plethora of studies examining maternal sensitivity links with offspring DNAm in both model organisms and humans (Dall' Aglio et al, 2020;Mcgowan et al, 2011;Moore et al, 2017;Provenzi et al, 2020), as well as several studies examining the association between DNAm and attachment, specifically (Darling Rasmussen & Storebø, 2021;Robakis et al, 2020).…”

“…Moreover, motherhood may arouse in women memories of childhood experiences with their own mother's parenting style and their relationship with caregivers [6]. Clearly, the transition to motherhood triggers the attachment system [7]. The attachment behavioral system is innate and may support individuals in time of need leading her/him to seek the proximity of people who care (i.e.…”

“…To illustrate, Bowlby's attachment theory (Bowlby 1997;Bowlby 1988), which has long been considered an important component in theories about child development, has recently been explored for an epigenetic connection. This enriches Bowlby's idea that 'proximity' between the child and care-giver is the critical variable in attachment, through an empirical search for epigenetic marks within the attachment relationship (Pietromonaco and Powers 2015;Robakis et al 2020;Ein-Dor et al 2018).…”
