Epigenomic Links Between Social Determinants of Health and Symptoms: A Scoping Review

Abstract: Social determinants of health (SDoH) impact health and wellness. The link between SDoH and adverse health outcomes, including symptom occurrence and severity, may be explained by an individual’s physiologic response to one or more SDoH. One potential mechanism underlying this physiologic response linking SDoH and symptoms is the dynamic epigenome. The purpose of this scoping review of the literature was to examine differential susceptibility for symptoms by identifying and summarizing research linking SDoH and… Show more

“…BDNF is also implicated in stress-related phenotypes, which given its role in brain-based gene regulation, has implications for shared mechanisms of other stress-related conditions, such as depression and anxiety. 58 GDNF is a protein coding gene specifically associated with SCI and is also involved in the RAF/MAP kinase cascade super pathway that, like JAK-STAT, regulates cellular processes related to differentiation, survival, senescence, and cell movement.…”

“…Social contextual factors include race and gender, but also include socially patterned access to social, education, and economic resources, as well as exposure to other environmental hazards within communities. Lifetime cumulative stress caused by the stressors of poverty and discrimination may accelerate aging, and thus the symptom experience [19].…”

“…Adverse life experiences and disadvantaged living conditions from an early age may explain the observed accumulation of mental health problems in prison populations worldwide [ 7 , 8 ]. Genetic predispositions combined with environmental stressors are implicated in the development of mental disorders [ 9 , 10 ]. People in prison generally experience low educational achievements, low income, and unstable housing.…”
