“…Epikeratophakia, a form of onlay lamellar keratoplasty, for the treatment of keratoconus was first introduced by Kaufmann and Werblin in 1982 [2]. The technique employs non-refractive, acellular, freeze-dried stromal lenticules prepared from donor corneas.…”

“…Following posterior dissection of the conjunctiva and removal of host epithelium, a donor corneoscleral lenticule devoid of endothelium and Descemet's membrane is placed over the host cornea and sutured over it at the periphery to sclera. 9 Epikeratoplasty was first described by Kaufman and Werblin 46 in treatment of aphakia, myopia, and keratoconus in children. It is considered a safe and easy procedure, especially in eyes with thinned corneas making extensive host corneal manipulation risky.…”

“…The improved corneal curvature (!50.0 D) was obtained by the flattening effect of the sutures, which were placed as in other lamellar techniques, such as epikeratophakia in keratoconus patients. 19 In our series, visual acuity improved after surgery. The final visual results were satisfying and similar to those achieved with PKP 20,21 and other lamellar keratoplasty techniques.…”
