Episodic memory in 3‐ and 4‐year‐old children

Abstract: There is considerable debate about the phylogenic and ontogenic origins of episodic memory. In the present experiment, we examined episodic memory in 3- and 4-year-old children. To do this, we developed a hide-and-seek task that allowed us to assess children's recall of the what-where-when (www) of the hiding event. In this task, the experimenter and the child hid three plush toys in three separate locations around the house. After a brief retention interval, children were asked to verbally recall, in order (i… Show more

“…Here, we examine the three main approaches used to study the memory for events in context: ( (16)]. This approach has also been adapted to many mammalian species, including rats (14,(17)(18)(19), mice (20), meadow voles (21), pigs (22), nonhuman primates (23,24), and humans (25,26). It is important to note that the structure and flexibility criteria have been much less investigated than the content criterion so it remains to be determined whether all these species will meet all three behavioral criteria.…”

“…This also implies that some components of episodic memory (e.g., the 'when' aspect) may be late developmental achievements (McCormack & Hoerl, 1999). Recent evidence is in accordance with this claim (Hayne & Imuta, 2011;McCormack & Hoerl, 2007). For example, in a hide-and-seek task 3-year-old children were able to recall in what room ('where') three toys ('what') had been hidden, but unlike their 4-year-old peers, the 3-year-olds had difficulties recalling the order ('when') in which the objects had been hidden (Hayne & Imuta, 2011).…”
