Epitactic textures of fcc Al on icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal

Abstract: An aluminum film is deposited on the fivefold-symmetric surface of icosahedral Al-Pd-Mn quasicrystal. Its orientation with respect to the bulk structure is studied using low-energy electron diffraction. It is found that Al nanocrystals grow in the face-centered cubic structure in five different sets of domains composing the film, and that their ͓111͔ axes are aligned parallel to one of five threefold-symmetry axes of the substrate quasicrystal at 37.37°away from the surface normal.

“…Twinning in thick crystalline films or overlayers on top of quasicrystals appears to be quite general, based on the fact that it has been observed also in several different, but analogous, systems: PtAl ͑Ref. 3͒ and AuAl overlayers 2 on the tenfold surface of a decagonal quasicrystal, and Al films 17 and cubic alloy overlays 18 on the same fivefold surface studied here.…”

“…There are reports of rotational epitaxy for different metals ͑Al, Ag, Fe, and Ni͒ grown on i-Al-Pd-Mn, where the adlayer forms as five crystalline domains reflecting the substrate symmetry and the formation of such domains results in the extra spots in the LEED pattern of metal films on the quasicrystalline surfaces. 6,26 The LEED patterns for 1.2 ML Na recorded at various electron energies ͑Fig. 2͒ do not show the presence of such multiple spots.…”

“…10 In comparison, pseudomorphism was not observed in studies of Al at or above coverages of 1 ML on a similar substrate, i-Al-Pd-Mn. 16 Formation of the pseudomorphic clusters in the former case was corroborated theoretically using a kinetic Monte Carlo ͑KMC͒ simulation of an appropriate "disordered bond network" lattice gas model. 17 An equally-important advantage of studying low coverages is that a wealth of information can be extracted about the kinetics of island nucleation and growth in the initial stages of film formation.…”

“…͓Other authors have recently used LJ parameters to generate the PES of various adsorbates on quasicrystals, successfully explaining experimental structures of equilibrated Al monolayers and noble gas monolayers. 16,29,30 Our work differs in that it focuses on the kinetics of formation of localized structure.͔ In our previous work, we identified a subset of physically-reasonable fivefold terminations of the Boudard model for bulk Al-Pd-Mn structure. We adopt one such termination here.…”
