Epithelioid Hemangioma of the Nose: A Challenging Diagnosis

Abstract: Epithelioid hemangioma is a rare reactive vasoproliferative disease presenting with painless vascular nodules in the dermal and subcutaneous tissues of the head and neck. Clinical diagnosis can be difficult as, in most cases, the only symptom is a progressively tender swelling next to a vessel course. Thus far, few cases of epithelioid hemangioma localized to the nose have been described in the literature. Herein, we present a case of a 47-year-old woman with just such a lesion of the nose, focusing on its dia… Show more

“…However, surgical excision of EH involving medium or large vessels presents the risk of massive intraoperative bleeding. Therefore, proper preoperative angiography and embolization of feeding vessels can minimize intraoperative bleeding and confirm the existence of collateral blood supply to distal organs dependent on blood supply from vessels susceptible to transection during the excision [ 1 ]. Although EH is classified as a benign vascular tumor per the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2002 Classification [ 5 ], reported recurrence rates range between 33% and 40% [ 8 , 10 ].…”

“…An epithelioid hemangioma (EH), also known as angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE), is a rare benign vascular lesion of uncertain pathogenesis most commonly affecting superficial small vessels within the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. EH typically presents as a dermatologic small superficial vascular lesion of bright or dusky red papules or nodule [ 1 - 3 ]. EH incidence is greater in females than males and is more prevalent in the Asian female population during the third and fourth decades of life [ 1 , 4 , 5 ].…”
