EPSPs of dentate gyrus granule cells during epileptiform bursts of dentate hilar "mossy" cells and area CA3 pyramidal cells in disinhibited rat hippocampal slices

Abstract: When hippocampal slices are exposed to GABAA antagonists, area CA3 pyramidal cells and dentate hilar “mossy” cells discharge in synchronized epileptiform bursts (Muller and Misgeld, 1991; Scharfman, 1994b). Dentate interneurons are excited simultaneously, but the degree of discharge varies (Scharfman, 1994b). This study primarily examined the activity of dentate granule cells simultaneous to the epileptiform bursts of pyramidal cells and mossy cells. EPSPs followed by large GABAB receptor-mediated IPSPs were g… Show more

“…Importantly, small EPSPs (i.e., 2-3 mV in peak amplitude, evoked by weak molecular layer stimulation) did not increase with hyperpolarization either. These data may reflect the decrease in granule cell input resistance with hyperpolarization from approximately Ϫ45 to Ϫ85 mV (Scharfman 1994a;Thomson et al 1998).…”

“…Pyramidal neurons of the CA3 project to CA1 via Schaffer collaterals, to mossy cells in the hilar region, and to neighboring CA3 neurons via recurrent collaterals (Miles and Wong, 1986;Li et al, 1994;Scharfman, 1994). In pup rats, enhanced expression of mGluR4 in the CA3 after status epilepticus could be associated with a greater inhibition of glutamate release from recurrent collaterals, thus affording protection from the ensuing cell death observed in adult CA3 neurons.…”

“…Similarly, inhibitory interneurons in the dentate hilus and granule cell layer discharge repetitively in association with bicuculline-induced epileptiform responses (Scharfman 1994a(Scharfman , 1994b. Moreover, GABAergic interneurons in the hippocampal CA1 region are strongly activated during high potassium/low magnesium-induced epileptiform bursts (Marchionni and Maccaferri 2009).…”
