Equatorial ozone characteristics as measured at Natal (5.9°S, 35.2°W)

Abstract: Ozone density profiles obtained with ECC balloon sondes during the first 3 years of a joint INPE/NASA long‐term program of measurements at Natal have been analyzed. Ozone variations with time, as expected, are small. A correlation analysis of ozone and temperature profiles taken concurrently indicates a small correlation coefficient in the troposphere, a positive and increasing correlation between the tropopause and the ozone peak, turning negative above it. Outstanding features of the data are tropospheric de… Show more

“…This is indicated in Figure 2, which shows an analysis of monthly mean ozonesonde data (which provide the vertical distribution of ozone in both the stratosphere and troposphere) from Natal, located on the east coast of Brazil. The top curve is taken from a climatology of total ozone measurements using ground-based Dobson instrumentation [Kirchhoff et al, 1983]. The other two curves are reproduced from ozonesonde data (V. W. J. H. Kirchhoff, unpublished data, 1985) and depict the relative seasonal variability of ozone observed in both the stratosphere and the troposphere.…”

“…For the digital sondes a vertical resolution of about 15 m can be achieved. The ECC launches of this data set use the same procedures as those used for the long-term observational program at Natal, Brazil, which has given excellent results [Kirchhoff et al, 1981;1983;1991]. The sampling pump efficiencies for the ECC sondes are individually calibrated before flight, following a procedure described by Torres and Bandy [1978]; the ozonesondes are also calibrated in the laboratory against UV ozone photometers, whose calibrations are traceable to the photometric ozone standards of the National Institute of Total column ozone and UVB radiation were measured by using an automated Brewer spectrophotometer [Brewer, 1973;Brewer and Kerr, 1973].…”
