“…Liquid‐liquid extraction procedure has been extensively employed for the separation and purification of target metal ions from the aqueous feed solution containing host of other metal ions . The aqueous solution employed in liquid‐liquid extraction is usually a nitric acid or hydrochloric acid medium and the organic phase is generally composed of a ligand or extractant diluted in an inert, hydrophobic medium known as diluent, in order to make a biphasic extraction system . n ‐Dodecane is generally used as a diluent in solvent extraction procedures.…”

“…n ‐Dodecane is generally used as a diluent in solvent extraction procedures. In contrast to the “inert” nature of diluent, the extractant requires polar functionalities, such as etheric, amidic or phosphoryl moieties etc., for coordination and subsequent separation of target metal ions from aqueous solution . However, to dissolve the polar extractants in a non‐polar diluent medium, the organic ligands are made with sufficiently organophilic character by attaching a long chain alkyl or aryl groups.…”

“…However, the results show that the hydrophilic modification ability of PEG400 is weaker compared with the other two treatment methods. This is because given the condition of 25 • C and a standard atmospheric pressure, the surface tension of four concentrations of PEG400 is between 45-50 mN•m −1 , the surface tension of four concentrations of TritonX-100 is 40 ± 1 mN•m −1 , the surface tension of Tween-20 (0.5-1.0% v/v) is 20-30 and the surface tension of Tween-20 (1.5-2.0% v/v) is 5-10 mN•m −1 [20]. The reason for this phenomenon is that TritonX-100 and Tween-20 are amphiphilic compounds, and their hydrophobic ends will be arranged on the water surface, which destroys the interaction between water molecules on the liquid surface and reduces the surface tension of the liquid, while PEG400 is a high hydrophilic compound, which has no hydrophobic chain segment to destroy the interaction between water molecules on the liquid surface, resulting in high surface tension of the solution.…”
