Equilibrium constant of the γ-sultone and extraction constant of sodium and potassium ions from water into benzene in presence of 18-crown-6 and bromocresol green

The mono-and bis-monoaza-15-crown-5-ethers and monoaza-18-crown-6-ethers, bound to the sulphophthalein dyes phenol and bromophenol red, were synthesized. Their complexing properties were studied and, on this basis, these substances were found to be suitable spectrophotometric reagents for nonextraction batch and flow-through (FIA) determination of Na þ and K þ ions in ethanol medium. The optimal reaction and flow conditions were found and a method was developed for determination of both ions. Although the reactions are not fully selective toward both ions, it is possible to carry out the determination of both ions in sample by using a suitably selected reagent at certain concentration ratios. The results are comparable for both dyes and for the mono-and bis-compounds; the size of the cavity in the crown ether is decisive.

The current teaching and practice of analytical chemistry reflect the evolution of measurement science over time. Qualitative and quantitative measurements can be traced back to prebiblical times, have been important throughout human history, and today are key to the functioning of a modern society. This review is designed to provide a brief overview of the evolution of analytical science and a summary of the evolution, development, and growth of analytical chemistry in the United States, with emphasis on developments up to the mid-twentieth century. Some degree of emphasis is placed on early centers of analytical chemistry and contributions of pioneers of analytical chemistry within the United States. The evolution of journals, early textbooks, and reference books on analytical chemistry as well as developments in analytical chemistry curricula in the United States are traced.
